ANDES SPROUTS SOCIETY
Andes Sprouts Society, a new media art organization and co-op farm located on twenty-three acres just outside of Andes, NY, wishes to showcase the Catskill Region's cultural heritage as well as stimulate bio-cultural productivity for our new global community; to do so, Andes Sprouts Society engages in crossover activities promoting artistic experiments integrating emergent technologies and organic farming. For this starting year, the society will work toward the exchange of knowledge and labor: of urban gardening and field farming, the sustainability of the land, and the perspective of our regional farmers, artists and the international community concerned with issues of sustainability and land-use management. Scheduling of Andes Sprouts programs parallel the farm's growing season cycle. We will hold on-going and specific open calls for soliciting applications from artists.
Residency Program

The Andes Sprouts Artist Residency Program offers dedicated individuals a supportive environment in which to further their creative development. The residency studios will be solar powered, rainwater fed and are constructed to be mobile to maintain flexibility with projects as well as our agriculture projects. We plan 3 season residency each year – 2 artists for each season, 6 artists per year, 12 artists for two year period.
There will be a publicly posted calendar of events to facilitate interaction between the Society and the local/urban public. In addition to open access to the farm, open hours will include a schedule of workshops, film screenings and presentations throughout the season. Resident artists are encouraged to participate in Andes Sprouts Society's efforts to connect with the local community and expand dialogue about creative solutions to current sustainability issues.
Barn Renovation
http://andessproutsbarn.wordpress.com/2010/04/13/
Though the 23 acres will have two mobile artist studios and a farm house for working and living, Andes Sprouts Society currently lacks an onsite venue for artists-in-residence to interact with their communities - both visitors from the city and beyond, and local residents and farmers. We plan to renovate the barn currently situated on the property to provide extra studio space for artists downstairs and a gallery/meeting-room/performance area upstairs for both our resident artists and also for local community groups and visitors. We hope that with your support we can hire a local architect to help accomplish this adaptive re-use of our barn as a community center for exchange in order to foster a culture of direct feedback from our local constituency.
The combination of new media/technology and small-scale agriculture seems like an abstract concept. The residency program at Andes Sprouts Society acts as a crucible for the development of applicable techniques, but a space for public demonstration and critique is fundamental to the process of implementing the successful applications to small-scale farms in this region. Additionally, the renovated barn would:
A) provide a public forum for the artists in residence to showcase their work.
B) provide a public meetinghouse for local community groups.
C) provide a non-commercial event space for public entertainment and fundraising for local projects.
